BubblesSOC

Hi I'm Bubs, welcome to my home on the web!

Thanks for stopping by! You have stumbled upon the personal website of Sidney Collins (aka Bubs). I'm a 24-year old student at the University of Alabama studying Computer Science and Mathematics. When I'm not busy programming you'll probably find me writing, drawing, reading, shopping, eating, or playing Monopoly.

London Explosions

Oh my! :shocked:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4659093.stm

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families! I hope the US isn’t in for anything… my baby is working in the capitol in Washington, D.C.!! He rides the metro everyday.

Domo Domo Domo

You know what would be really cool? If I could go to bed at a decent hour instead of staying up all night and sleeping until 3pm the following day O_o It’s 5:15am and needless to say, I haven’t slept tonight. What is wrong with me?!

Any of you American readers have big Independence Day plans? I sure don’t! I’m in Tuscaloosa all by myself :cry: I should’ve gone home so that I could watch fireworks with my deddy and mommy but NOOOO, I had to sleep all day yesterday. My friend Jennifer, who shares my passion for consuming mass quantities of sushi and shrimp scampi, said that she’d be back in town today. Maybe she’ll go grab a bite to eat with me ;)

RaWwRR! I’ve been giving William a non-stop guilt trip for leaving me all by myself while he ran off to Washington D.C. for the first month of summer break. I conned him into buying me some Domo-kun toys - a pen and plush. I can’t wait until they arrive! I know I’m jumping on the bandwagon 3 years late, but I’m totally obsessed with Domo-kun! I recently watched the video clips - he’s soooo cute. Speaking of the clips, does anyone know where I can find translations/subs?

I’m going to go grab some breakfast (two Chic-Fil-A chicken biscuits to be exact! :9) Nevermind, Chic-Fil-A was closed for the holiday :grr:

Pixie and her baby bone squeaker

What a cute lil face!

I need to get some new photos of Coco as well :spin:

I get to design another website… one of my friends asked me to make one for his fraternity… I should start a business and make some $$$!

Three Years and Counting

Sunday was our three-year anniversary… too bad William is still in D.C. :( He did send me some purty flowers … the prettiest I’ve ever received!

Purty Flowers!

I’ve been working on the website for the U of A Philosophy Department non-stop. It’s a work in progress, but you can catch a sneak-peak of it here.

Batman Begins is really good… 5 out of 5, in my opinion. It’s not silly at all, like some comic book adaptions. I hope to see War of the Worlds this weekend. I’m sure I’ll love it because Steven Spielberg can do no wrong in my eyes :nod:

Oh yeah, I made a myspace.com account… feel free to add me as your friend.

Revenge of the Sid

It’s been a while, huh? :sweatdrop: I really haven’t been in the mood for the internet lately… these past weeks have been pretty crazy. If you’re interested in some of what’s been going on, check out my livejournal. It’s a protected entry, so just let me know if you want me to add you as a friend ;)

So, I got a new job. Well, two jobs actually, but the first job is for course credit instead of money. First off, I was asked to design the website for the Philosophy department at the university. I’m really excited since I’ll be able to use some of my new CSS and PHP skills :nod: Second, I’m working as a systems administrator for the Business school technology department. I just started last Monday and I’ve already learned a ton of new stuff. I’m currently shadowing a grad student who is moving soon. He totally lost me today talking about networking… Hopefully I’ll understand it better once I start playing with it.

You may have noticed already, but I finally converted my site to pure css! (i.e. The content is exactly the same on every page. The layout is totally governed by a stylesheet) Take a look at my page with the stylesheet turned off and you’ll see what I mean. I’ve only implemented Bliss, 3-d, Doodleblog, Fruit, and Cleaned-Up so far… I’ll get around to fixing the other skins sometime this summer :lol: Oh and also, BubblesSOC is now valid XHTML 1.1.

Darth SID-uous!!

Who all went to see Revenge of the Sith? I did, twice! :spin: Will and I met some friends in Birmingham for the midnight showing. While waiting for 12am to roll around, I ventured to Wal-Mart to buy a light saber. They were sold out, so I got a Vader mask instead. I think I was the first Darth Vader to don a mini-skirt :rofl: I went to see it again with my dad on Saturday. The special effects were mind-blowing and I’m buying the soundtrack as soon as I get paid. I thought it was amazing, but my heart still belongs to the original trilogy. I have to admit though, Anakin is pretty hot :beat: You can listen to some selected Star Wars tracks in my Radio Blog.

My inbox is overflowing!! I’ll try to get back to everyone who has emailed me asap. Next week, I’m going to start getting the Qbee Admin Script ready for public release. Well, that’s all I gots to say tonight! If you’re lucky, I’ll post again tomorrow hehe

IE Fieldset Bug

i have to type this entry in lowercase because my keyboard is acting up again :-P

in my quest to convert my site to pure css, i’ve been working a lot with styled fieldsets using a great tutorial found here. i stumbled upon a bug that’s been bothering me for days. the textarea and submit button inside of my fieldsets keep getting shoved over in ie, causing the entire layout to collapse. the other form elements, however, are not affected.

here’s what it’s supposed to look like (firefox)
here’s what it looks like in ie

after tweaking the stylesheet a bit, i discovered that the textarea/button nested inside the fieldset was inheriting all other specified left-margins in ie. here’s an example of what i mean:

the textarea is shoved to the right by 25 pixels, even though the margins were specified as zero

the code:

<div class="cont1">
     .cont1
     <div class="cont2">
          .cont2
          <fieldset>
               <textarea cols="10" rows="5"></textarea><br />
               <input type="button" value="Button" />
          </fieldset>
     </div>
</div>

the css:

.cont1 {
     background: blue;
     margin: 0 0 0 10px;
     padding: 5px;
}
.cont2 {
     background: yellow;
     margin: 0 0 0 15px;
     padding: 5px;
}
fieldset {
     margin: 0;
     padding: 0;
}
fieldset textarea {
     margin: 0;
     padding: 0;
}

the textarea and input button are shoved to the right by 25 pixels (the left margin of cont1 + the left margin of cont2). i haven’t had time to do thorough research, but as far as i know, there is no workaround for this bug. i did find someone else who had the same problem, however. someone suggested in the comments to enclose the elements in an arbitrary div, and that seemed to work for me.

textarea and input button enclosed by an arbitrary div

new code (same stylesheet):

<div class="cont1">
     .cont1
     <div class="cont2">
          .cont2
          <fieldset>
               <div class="arbitrary">
                    <textarea cols="10" rows="5"></textarea><br />
                    <input type="button" value="Button" />
               </div>
          </fieldset>
     </div>
</div>

the arbitrary div idea is fine for now, but i’d like to find another way to remedy this bug. has anyone else had this problem? if so, how did you fix it?

this is the last week of the semester! hopefully i’ll be back to blogging regularly by next week :-)

New Skin: Fruit Basket

*I’m doing some site maintenance, so beware of errors! They will go away :D *

I finally got around to making a new skin. It was originally intended for my webring, but since I was putting so much effort into the CSS, I figured I might as well use it for my main site ;) Some of you may remember the pear and orange from an old webring layout. I spruced them up a bit with my new tablet (which is incredibly hard to use, I might add). I made the pink tiled background, but the green one is from Squidfingers.com. The top image is a 88698 byte PNG, so let me know if I need to splice it up in order to cut down on loading time. Any feedback is much appreciated!

PS - I’ve been converted! I’m now a full-time Firefox user :)

My 21st Birthday

Aww, thank you all so much for the birthday wishes! I feel so loved :beat: Aneesah’s and Peter’s gifts are displayed in the Awards/Gifts section. You can also see the beautiful birthday patches I received on my quilt. I had a wonderful day. My parents got me a Wacom Graphire3 4×5 Tablet. Will ordered me a Coach purse, but they sent it to Tuscaloosa instead of Florence :frown:

Tuesday morning, we took Pixie to get spayed. The vet let me see her when she was waking up from the surgery. She was still groggy and she kept bumping in to the sides of the cage :( I felt so sorry for her. She is feeling much better now, though. She is supposed to be ‘taking it easy,’ but instead, she’s as playful as ever!

Tuesday evening, William, Michael, and I drove up to Nashville, TN to see Rachael and celebrate my birthday. That night, we went to a bar called The Tin Roof… it was a lot of fun. We saw a couple of famous people ;) The following day we ate at an awesome sushi buffet called Ru San’s … it was a really cool place, I felt like I was at a restaurant in NYC! You can see a couple of pictures from the night in my album.

As soon as I finish my webring script, I’m going to start on a new layout for this place. It’s time for a bright, summery look :D

Spring Break Begins

Spring Break is here and I can finally relax!! This is the first time I’ve been home to see my family since Christmas :dizzy: I’ve been so busy with school this semester.

I recently learned some cool PHP tricks, so I’ve been coding a lot lately. I added an admin panel to my plugboard script, but I’m sure it’s full of bugs since I wrote it in five minutes O_o I also wrote a quilt management script for the Quilting Bee that I am quite proud of. If you’re a Qbee member and you’re interested in using my script, just email me for the details. Right now, I’m working on a script for my Ringsurf-powered webring, Oh My Cuteness. When I complete the script, I think I’m going to start from scratch and be a little more selective for membership.

I’m so proud of William! He got an internship with Congressman Aderholt of Alabama for this summer. I’m going to be lonely without him. The good news is that I’ll get to go to Washington D.C. to visit him :D

Just two more days until I’m 21! I can’t believe that I’m practically an adult :shocked: Too bad our vacation plans for this week didn’t work out… I was going to celebrate my birthday at the beach. I’ve asked my parents to get me one of these tablet thingies… anyone familiar with them? If so, is there a certain type/brand that you can recommend?

Well I’m pooped, so I’m heading to bed. Happy Easter!

Visit Natasja and Dayna :)

Be Back in 3 Days…

Pixie sleeping under my chair
Don’t lose hope, I’ll be back next week! I’m just drowning in school right now :worried: I have a lot to talk about, so stay tuned. My baby (pictured above) came back home… early. I rescheduled her appointment because I was so lonely without her!
