In my previous entry (now deleted) I posted my Xbox Gamercard. Today, I noticed that it wasn’t showing up. I checked the source and found this spam lurking:
<style> .bll { position:absolute; left:-1700px; } </style>
<p class="bll"> <a href="http://forum.freeboards.net/index.php?mforum=buylevitraon">buy levitra online</a></p>
WTF?? I didn’t put it there… Can spam edit WP entries now? Scary

Oh dear, I really hope not. It’s bad enough having to deal with those pesky spam comments!

I would definitely Google around to see if other people have had this occur. It definitely does seem really weird that it would have been included.
Was it included in your post itself? Check out WP’s support for sure.

Did you ever find out the problem?
I know this might sound “dumb” but could it have to do with writable files/folders?

That is scary, Bubs. I didn’t think spam could do that with WP entries. Hmm…makes me wonder now. I know that spam can make comments, but edit entries. That is something new to me. Hope you get it figured out.
BTW, you have been tagged, now don’t hate me, Bubs. Heidi & Zala made me. Though I think you have already been tagged once.

I also got that exact bot on my header.php. Now, I’m basically making all theme templates unwritable except when I need to change a few things around. Annoying, isn’t it?

First of all, welcome back!
That’s indeed scary. Did they manage to hack into your Wordpress/FTP account or something? Why would they edit something like that?? I mean I don’t think they can edit files through a web browser or something, but if they hacked into your account why would they only change that bit of code? Scary stuff.

If you don’t keep your version of wordpress up to date, spammers will chown you. It’s well worth the couple of hundred to buy a non-open-source piece of software for your blog. All versions of wordpress are given out with full sourcecode. If you have it, so do ‘They’. I remember being a CS major at UA and found it tough to afford my bad habits much less blogging software. You may want to visit http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Spam_Tools and add some kind of plugin to this install. I know when I first started on my php/mysql adventure and had a shared hosting account that feces would always happen to my stuff because other people are on the same box as you. It’s tough to maintain user integrity in shared environments.
Good luck with your spam situation. Take care of it before it takes care of you.
Thanks,
Dan

I am a newbie with web-design, but that seems so weird and I would have imagined it impossible for a bot to spam your code! That is truly scary!!!
And also….welcome back!

Ugh, spam. I’ve had to close guestbooks and other forms due to it.
Why do they call it spam anyway? Does it have anything to do with the canned meat?

That’s weird. The only thing I can think of is perhaps you had a few templates writable, and spam somehow got into it?
By the way, happy belated Thanksgiving.
