Hi I'm Bubs, welcome to my home on the web!

Thanks for stopping by! You have stumbled upon the personal website of Sidney Collins (aka Bubs). I'm a 25-year old student at the University of Alabama studying Computer Science and Mathematics. When I'm not busy programming you'll probably find me writing, drawing, reading, shopping, eating, or playing Monopoly.

First Post of 2009

I’m not going to bother with New Year’s resolutions since they are the same every year.  School starts this Wednesday.  I should be celebrating my last semester of college.  However, a required Stats class conflicted with two of my other required classes, leaving me to graduate in August rather than May :frown: I started college in 2002 so I’ve officially caught up with Van Wilder

I haven’t wasted time partying though (I guess that’s what Van Wilder did… I haven’t seen the film.)  I was an English/Spanish major before deciding to change colleges and study Computer Science, which put me a year behind.  I also suffered from some health issues that led to my surgery and caused me to miss two semesters.  My dad had promised to buy me a new car when I graduated from college.  My friends joked that there would be flying cars by that time  I’ll be getting a wedding from my dad for graduation rather than a new car.  Looks like I’ll be driving my 1999 Isuzu Rodeo until she dies (I’ve had her since I turned 16.)

Anyways, here’s my Spring 2009 schedule:

  • Intro Operating Systems
  • Compiler Construction
  • Intro Numerical Analysis
  • Software Design & Development
  • Ethical Societal Issues
  • Undergraduate Research

I’m really looking forward to Operating Systems… I’ve heard wonderful things about the professor!  Not so much Compilers — the teacher is the hardest in the department x_x I had him for Algorithms last semester and almost failed the course (I’m an A-B student, so that is really out of character for me.)  Compilers is a programming course, though.  I’m really good at programming (had the highest grade in my Programming Languages class last semester) but I struggle with theoretical crap.

Well I’m off to play some Halo 3.  Catch me on Xbox Live — I’m QueenSiD.

Those sound like some crazy courses, but seem like they would be fun once you get into them. Only a couple more months; they will pass by so quickly. ;)

So what are you going to be/do after your graduation?

I got in to a course called webdesign and graphic design. But I’m also going to work, so I wonder how it will turn out. I have no idea what I’m going to do in the future.

This is my last semester as well. I’m both happy and nervous as hell. I’m praying I do well. LOL. Good luck with your classes, hun! Kick some learning ass. ;)

American uni-systems are odd. How can a required class conflict with other classes? (well, I know how… but it’s just odd that you can first graduate a few months later).

Congrats on your last semester :)

Aww, it seems like you’ve had a lot of setbacks. I think it will only make you appreciate your graduation more ;)

Lol @ flying cars by the time you graduate xD

    Happy new year!

Wow, those are tough courses! I know ‘cos I have taken some before during my undergrad years :P But then again, I suck at programming. So maybe you will enjoy them more than me. For me last time, Discrete Maths was the killer subject.

Well, this is my last semester…I don’t have a clue whether I’m gonna make it to the master grad this fall or not and it’s scary.

Your subjects seem….eh…to computer science. Pity about having to wait until August to graduate, but I’m sure it isn’t that bad??

    Best of luck!

My last semester in CS too.

I have only 3 topics, but I have a huge project on natural language processing to do. I’m attempting to make a system that uses a grammar (which I am also constructing from scratch) to randomly generate and evaluate Japanese sentences, so basically a parser – in Python o_o Yeah, I threw myself into the deep end but I have a good computational linguist as my supervisor. I’ve already changed my plan like 5 times.

My taught modules are: text searching and processing, advanced security topics and something to do with the intarwebs. I still have three exams to come this month though for cryptography, artificial intelligence and internet systems.

I completely ditched any algorithms focussed modules for reasons that are probably quite apparent to you. ;) God forbid if I should ever encounter lambda calculus.

    Good luck. :D

Woohoo, we should call you Bubs Wilder from now on. Just kidding! Your beautiful wedding will be worth driving an older car! ;) I have only had one car in my lifetime as well.. It died a few months ago. *sniff* I literally cried.
